What religion is Sexyy Red?
Sexyy Red is an American rapper who identifies as a Christian. In an interview, she described herself as “I always pray to God! I’m not no evil spirit; I’m just a carefree spirit in my raps.”
Sexyy Red rose to mainstream success with “Pound Town” featuring Tay Keith in 2023. The song’s remix, “Pound Town 2” featuring Nicki Minaj, became her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. She followed with “SkeeYee,” and both singles appeared on her mixtape Hood Hottest Princess (2023), which established her as one of hip-hop’s breakout artists. In 2023, Sexyy Red appeared on Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy,” which reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her 2024 single “Get It Sexyy” preceded her mixtape In Sexyy We Trust (2024), which became her first project to reach the top 20 of the Billboard 200. Her feature on Tyler, the Creator’s “Sticky,” alongside GloRilla and Lil Wayne, reached the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Song.

Early life and education
Janae Nierah Wherry was born on April 15, 1998, in St. Louis, Missouri, to her mother Andrea Jenkins. She was raised in St. Louis, the community where the 2014 police shooting of Michael Brown took place. She attended and graduated from Normandy High School in St. Louis and did not pursue higher education. Her stage name derives from a middle school nickname, “Red,” earned through her signature red hair and clothing. Growing up, she listened to Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Project Pat, Juicy J, Three 6 Mafia, Chief Keef, Webbie, Boosie Badazz, and Trina.
Early music career
Sexyy Red began recording rap songs around 2018 and more consistently from 2019 onward, initially releasing tracks independently and building a local following in St. Louis. Her first official releases included songs like “Ah Thousand Jugs” and “Free Smoke,” the latter later catching the attention of industry insiders in 2021. Her entry into rapping was framed as a personal response to betrayal: she wrote and recorded a diss track aimed at her then-boyfriend, the father of her son, after discovering his infidelity, and that experience pushed her to pursue rap more seriously. In December 2022, she released her first official project, the mixtape Ghetto Superstar, under Rebel Music, which received local praise and helped set the stage for her breakout.
“Pound Town”
“Pound Town” was released on January 27, 2023, with an accompanying music video, and it became Sexyy Red’s first major viral hit. The song was produced by Tay Keith, who sent her the instrumental, and the vocal performance was largely improvised as a freestyle in the studio. The track gained massive traction on TikTok, where it sparked the viral “Pound Town Challenge” and was used in hundreds of thousands of user videos. In late May 2023, a remix titled “Pound Town 2” featuring Nicki Minaj was released, marking Sexyy Red’s first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100, where it entered at number 66 and later peaked at that position. Her follow-up single “SkeeYee” achieved similar success and was named the inaugural number-one on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart in September 2023. Both songs were included on her second mixtape, Hood Hottest Princess, released in June 2023. Billboard declared her one of the biggest breakout artists of summer 2023. That same year, she appeared on official remixes of “Slut Me Out” by NLE Choppa, “Shake Sumn” by DaBaby, and “Peaches & Eggplants” by Young Nudy alongside Latto.
Major collaborations
In August 2023, Drake invited her to join his It’s All a Blur Tour as a surprise addition, replacing her previously scheduled slot on Moneybagg Yo’s tour. Drake referred to her as his “rightful wife” on Instagram following their backstage appearances together. In February 2024, she appeared in Drake’s music video for “Rich Baby Daddy,” which also starred SZA, with the video filmed in the delivery room where she gave birth to her daughter nine days earlier. “Rich Baby Daddy” peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her 2024 single “Get It Sexyy” preceded her third mixtape, In Sexyy We Trust, released in July 2024. In October 2024, she appeared on Tyler, the Creator’s single “Sticky” alongside GloRilla and Lil Wayne, which peaked in the top ten of the Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards. Her 2025 single “Whatchu Kno About Me” with GloRilla received double platinum certification from the RIAA.
In January 2025, she released “Fat Juicy & Wet” with Bruno Mars, which peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one on Urban Radio. In 2025, she also collaborated with Justin Bieber on “Sweet Spot” from his album SWAG and with DJ Tiësto on “OMG” for the F1: The Movie soundtrack. She won Best Breakthrough Hip Hop Artist at the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards and received two nominations at the 2025 American Music Awards. Billboard named her the Indie Rapper of the Year at their annual Indie Power Players event. Her fourth studio album, Yo Favorite Trappa Favorite Rappa, was released on April 16, 2026.

WWE reportedly offered her a permanent role with the brand, which she did not accept. She performed at Rolling Loud California 2024, Rolling Loud Miami 2024, and Rolling Loud California 2025 and made her Coachella debut in April 2026. She launched the Sexyy Red 4 President Tour in August 2024, which extended into 2025 with arena dates in Toronto, Chicago, and St. Louis. She endorsed brands including Au Vodka, Bay Smokes, and Ed Hardy Forever in 2024 and walked the red carpet at the 2025 American Music Awards. Her Instagram account reached 5.4 million followers by July 2026.
Personal life
Sexyy Red has three children. Her first child, a son named Sexyy Chuckie Jr., was born in 2020. His father, her high school sweetheart also named Chuckie, is currently incarcerated. She announced her second pregnancy on Instagram on October 15, 2023, and gave birth to a daughter on February 5, 2024. Nine days later, footage from her delivery room was used in Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy” music video.
Red has publicly addressed struggles with postpartum depression following the birth of her third child in 2023, describing emotional turmoil during the recording of “Get It Sexyy.” In August 2023, she disclosed on a podcast that she is a survivor of sexual assault. In December 2024, the alleged father of one of her children publicly accused her of knowingly transmitting sexually transmitted infections to multiple partners, which she denied as false and motivated by personal animosity. In October 2024, a man named Vladimir Joseph, who falsely posed as her manager at one of her events in Miami, was arrested and charged with armed sexual battery and false imprisonment. In addition, she initially expressed public support for Donald Trump before revealing in November 2024 that she voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
