What religion is Latto?
Latto is an American rapper whose religious belief is Christian. She frequently references God in her songs, including “On God” and “Sunday Services.” She made a statement in one of her lyrics saying, “Jesus walked on water, I got ice boilin’ though.”
Latto rose to fame in 2019 with her breakout single “Bitch from da Souf.” She went on to release the EPs Big Latto and Hit the Latto, the former of which spawned the hit single that originally launched her mainstream career. Latto had further hits with her singles “Big Energy” and “Put It on da Floor Again,” which are featured on her subsequent projects leading up to her fourth studio album, Big Mama. Among her numerous career achievements, Latto has won two BET Awards, a BET Hip Hop Award, a Billboard Music Award, an MTV Video Music Award, and two Grammy nominations. In addition, she was included in the 2020 XXL Freshman Class and was named MTV’s “Global Push Artist of the Month” in 2021.
Early life
Alyssa Michelle Stephens, known professionally as Latto, was born on December 22, 1998, in Columbus, Ohio, to Misti Pitts and Shayne Stephens and was raised in Riverdale, Georgia, after moving there as a child. She attended Lovejoy High School in Hampton, Georgia, and attended Clayton County schools, where she said her local environment gave her street credibility. She was bullied in school for being light-skinned, and that experience led her to adopt the stage name Miss Mulatto as a child rapper, drawing on the old racial classification “mulatto.” When she was ten, she decided she wanted to be a rapper and began writing her own songs, and before pursuing music, she was involved in drag racing.
The Rap Game and early career
In 2016, Stephens appeared on the first season of Lifetime’s reality series The Rap Game, produced by Jermaine Dupri and Queen Latifah, appearing under the name Miss Mulatto and ultimately winning the competition. After winning, Dupri offered her a recording contract with So So Def Records, but she turned it down because she felt the deal was not financially sufficient, choosing instead to remain independent. She released her second mixtape, Latto Let ‘Em Know, in April 2017, which included tracks like “Response Diss,” a diss song directed at Young Lyric, another competitor from The Rap Game, and the two artists exchanged multiple diss tracks over their feud.
Queen of Da Souf and breakthrough
Stephens released “Bitch from da Souf” in January 2019, and by May she performed at Rolling Loud Miami; the song became her breakout hit and entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 95, eventually earning a gold certification from the RIAA and later a platinum certification. A remix of the track featuring Saweetie and Trina was released later in 2019 and served as the lead single for her debut studio album Queen of da Souf. In March 2020, she officially signed with RCA Records, and in July she released the promotional singles “No Hook” and “He Say She Say” before dropping the Gucci Mane features single “Muwop” in July, which samples Gucci’s “Freaky Gurl.” “Muwop” was certified platinum and, together with the “Bitch from da Souf” remix, led her debut album Queen of da Souf, released in August 2020, which peaked at number 44 on the Billboard 200. She also appeared in Cardi B’s “WAP” video, was featured on NLE Choppa’s “Make Em Say,” and was included in XXL’s 2020 Freshman Class, all in August 2020.
Name change and mainstream dominance
In early 2021, Stephens announced that she would no longer use the name Mulatto because the term was criticized as colorist, and in May she officially changed her professional name to Latto on streaming platforms, releasing the single “The Biggest” alongside the name change. In September 2021, she released “Big Energy,” which sampled Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love” and became her highest-charting solo entry at that time, peaking at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later reaching number 7 on the Year-End Hot 100. A remix featuring Mariah Carey was released in March 2022, and the two performed the song together at the 2022 BET Awards, where Latto won Best New Artist. “Big Energy” was triple-platinum certified and earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Melodic Rap Performance for its live performance, as well as a Best New Artist nomination at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. “Big Energy” served as the lead single for her second studio album 777, released in March 2022, which debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200.
In 2023, she was nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys; released “Lottery”; and, in July, appeared on Jung Kook’s debut solo single “Seven,” which became her first song to reach number 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200. Her 2023 single “Put It on da Floor Again,” featuring Latto and later remixed with Cardi B, peaked at number 13 on the Hot 100.
Sugar Honey Iced Tea and Big Mama
Latto’s third studio album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea, was released on August 9, 2024, through Streamcut and RCA Records, and it matched 777 by debuting at number 15 on the Billboard 200. The album featured collaborations with Megan Thee Stallion, Ciara, Coco Jones, Young Nudy, Flo Milli, Teezo Touchdown, Mariah the Scientist, Hunxho, and others, and its pre-release singles included “Put It On Da Floor,” “Sunday Service,” and “Big Mama,” each later remixed with additional artists, including Cardi B, Flo Milli, and Megan Thee Stallion. “Big Mama,” released on June 28, 2024, is a single where Latto uses a rap-singing style and lyrics about her romantic relationship and confidence in her love, and it received a Grammy nomination for Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. The album was described as Atlanta-inspired and drew references to the 2006 film ATL, with Latto citing Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Lil Kim, and Kelis as influences on its sound. A separate project titled Big Mama is listed as a 2026 album in her discography but without further detailed public information beyond that.
Music collaborations
Latto has collaborated with a wide range of mainstream artists across genres, including on “Do It” (Chloe x Halle) with Doja Cat and City Girls; “Down” with G-Eazy; “Sex Lies” with Lil Baby; “Go Crazy (Remix)” with Chris Brown, Young Thug, Future, and Lil Durk; and “For the Night” with Chloe Bailey, as well as a rap opera collaboration with Christina Aguilera titled “Did Somebody Say HipOpera” in October 2023. In 2024, she was featured on the remix of Jennifer Lopez’s “Can’t Get Enough,” and in 2025 she released “Somebody,” which interpolates Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody?”
Other ventures
Outside of music, she opened her own store, Pittstop Clothing, in Jonesboro, Georgia, in 2017, and in 2021 she founded the Win Some Give Some Foundation to support at-risk young women with resources and mentoring. She was included in Variety’s “Breakthrough Artist” list for 2022, named MTV’s “Global Push Artist of the Month” in February 2021, and was honored with the Billboard Women in Music Powerhouse Award in 2023.
Personal life
Latto supported Stacey Abrams’ 2022 gubernatorial campaign in Georgia and brought Abrams onstage during a performance where she opened for Lizzo’s The Special Tour in Atlanta. In September 2025, she confirmed that she is in a relationship with rapper 21 Savage, and in March 2026 she announced that she was pregnant. In May 2026, she confirmed that she had given birth to their first child, a daughter.
Legal issues
In May 2019, Latto was arrested for theft after being mistaken for another woman, and she released the track “Fuck Rice Street” in response, stating her frustration with the police and asserting her innocence. In May 2021, she was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport after being found in possession of a loaded firearm. On September 28, 2023, she was pulled over in Atlanta after running a red light. She told the officer she was trying to hurry home to avoid being followed by fans, and after receiving a ticket and passing a breathalyzer test she was allowed to leave.
