Derulo has sold more than 250 million singles worldwide and earned 14 RIAA Platinum singles in the United States. He has received nominations from the Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, and Teen Choice Awards. In addition, he signed with Atlantic Records in 2021 and has remained one of the most-streamed pop and R&B artists, with billions of streams across digital platforms and one of the largest followings among musicians on TikTok.
Early life
Jason Joel Desrouleaux was born on September 21, 1989, in Miramar, Florida, to Haitian immigrant parents Joel and Jocelyne Desrouleaux. His father owned an import-export business, and his mother attended law school, and Haitian Creole was the first language spoken in the household before English. He is the youngest of three children, with an older brother named Joel and an older sister. Derulo wrote his first song, “Crush on You,” at age eight and was performing in school talent shows from age five.
Derulo was first educated at the Dillard Center for the Arts at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, where he studied piano, jazz, and musical theater before graduating early, before turning 16. Later on, he then moved to New York to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, majoring in musical theater with additional training in opera, ballet, and dance. He also secured a role in the Broadway production of Rent and appeared in theater productions of Ragtime and Smokey Joe’s Cafe.
Early music career
While still a teenager, Derulo began writing songs for established artists, including Diddy, Danity Kane, Donnie Klang, Sean Kingston, Cassie, Lil Wayne, and Pitbull. He co-wrote “Bossy” for rapper Birdman and made a guest appearance on the track as a vocalist. In 2006, Derulo won the grand prize on Showtime at the Apollo, which helped attract the attention of producer J.R. Rotem, who signed him to his independent label Beluga Heights Records. That same year, he signed a songwriting deal with the label, and when Beluga Heights became part of Warner Music Group, he transitioned into a solo recording artist.
Commercial breakthrough
In August 2009, Derulo released his debut single “Whatcha Say,” produced by J.R. Rotem and sampling Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek.” The song debuted at number 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 and climbed to number one in November 2009, selling over five million digital downloads and earning quintuple platinum certification from the RIAA. His debut self-titled studio album followed in March 2010 and peaked at number 11 on the Billboard 200, producing further top-ten Hot 100 singles, including “In My Head” at number five and “Ridin’ Solo” at number nine. In 2009 and 2010, Derulo joined Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball Tour as an opening act to promote the album. His second studio album, Future History, arrived in September 2011, but promotional plans were derailed when he broke a vertebra while rehearsing and was forced to cancel all tour dates. In September 2013, his third album, Tattoos, was released and was repackaged in the United States as Talk Dirty in April 2014, featuring the platinum single “Talk Dirty” with 2 Chainz and “Wiggle” with Snoop Dogg. His fourth album, Everything Is 4, followed in June 2015, producing the top-five Hot 100 single “Want to Want Me.” Across his first four studio albums, Derulo accumulated over 250 million singles sold worldwide and 14 platinum singles in the United States.

TikTok pioneer
In June 2020, Derulo collaborated with New Zealand producer Jawsh 685 on “Savage Love (Laxed—Siren Beat),” which went viral on TikTok and peaked at number one in the UK as his fifth number-one in that country, and when the song was later remixed with BTS, the remix reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his second American chart-topper after “Whatcha Say” in 2009 and marking the longest gap between number-one hits for male artists since Dr. Dre’s “Crack a Bottle” in 2009. Derulo is one of the earliest mainstream artists to embrace TikTok as a primary creative platform, joining in 2019 and growing his account to over 66 million followers, making him one of the most followed musicians on the platform globally. This TikTok-driven success helped him leave Warner Bros. Records in May 2020 due to creative differences, cancel the planned release of 2Sides (Side 2), and sign with Atlantic Records in March 2021.
Expansion into acting
Derulo played Rum Tum Tugger in the 2019 musical film Cats, alongside Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, and Taylor Swift, a role that marked his first major film appearance. He also appeared in television dramas such as Lethal Weapon in 2016, guest jumped on Empire and Drop the Mic, and served as a judge on So You Think You Can Dance starting in 2015 and later as a coach on the Australian version of The Voice in 2023. In 2023, he starred as Ron Isley in the biographical film Spinning Gold, and in 2017 he was a guest coach on The Voice of Germany and a guest host and performer on Sounds Like Friday Night. Adding to it, he has also appeared as a judge on So You Think You Can Dance in 2015 and The Voice Australia and as a dance master on the Australian television series Everybody Dance Now alongside Kelly Rowland. He made a guest appearance on an episode of Fox’s drama series Lethal Weapon.
Business
Derulo has invested his earnings across several major ventures. He is an investor and partner in Rocket Carwash, a chain valued at $2 billion. He co-owns the Omaha Supernovas, a professional women’s volleyball team competing in the Pro Volleyball Federation, making him one of a small number of music artists to hold ownership in a professional sports franchise. He owns and operates the team alongside Omaha serial entrepreneur Daniel White. Additionally, he has also launched his own label, Future History, co-owned with his manager Frank Harris, and signed artists such as Arlene Zelina, and his professional activities have expanded into management, mentorship, and brand building beyond his music.
Personal life
Derulo dated singer Jordin Sparks for three years, from 2012, before the two parted ways in September 2014. He later dated model Jena Frumes, and the two welcomed a son, Jason King Derulo, in May 2021. The couple ended their relationship a few months after their son’s birth and have since co-parented amicably.
In February 2012, while rehearsing for his Future History Tour, Derulo broke his C-3 vertebra and was placed in a neck brace, forcing the cancellation of all planned tour dates. He made his post-injury return at the eleventh season finale of American Idol in May 2012.
In October 2023, singer Emaza Gibson filed a lawsuit against Derulo alleging quid pro quo sexual harassment, intimidation, and breach of contract, citing their work together after she was signed to his label Future History in 2021, and in April 2024 a California judge dismissed the case based on forum selection clauses requiring disputes to be settled in New York, with Gibson stating her intent to refile the suit in New York.
Away from music, Derulo is a supporter of English football club Leicester City.
