What religion is Lil Pump?

Lil Pump is an American rapper and songwriter who is a Christian and has roots in Catholicism.

Lil Pump emerged as one of the leading figures of the SoundCloud rap movement after “Gucci Gang” became a global breakthrough. The single reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, received 5× Platinum certification from the RIAA, and helped his self-titled debut album, Lil Pump (2017), debut at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Lil Pump expanded his commercial success with hit singles including “Esskeetit,” “Drug Addicts,” “Butterfly Doors,” “I Love It” with Kanye West, “Be Like Me” featuring Lil Wayne, and “Welcome to the Party” with Diplo, French Montana, and Zhavia Ward for the Deadpool 2 soundtrack. His second studio album, Harverd Dropout (2019), debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, while “I Love It” became his highest-charting international collaboration and earned multi-platinum certifications in several countries.

Early life

Lil Pump was born Gazzy Garcia on August 17, 2000, in Miami, Florida, to Colombian immigrant parents who divorced when he was six years old. He was raised by his mother alongside an older half-brother. Garcia was expelled from multiple district schools in Miami for fighting and inciting a riot and later enrolled in an opportunity high school before being expelled again in the tenth grade. He has publicly disclosed that he has dyslexia and began smoking marijuana as early as sixth grade. At age 13, his cousin Lil Ominous introduced him to Omar Pineiro, known as Smokepurpp, and the two eventually became collaborators.

Career beginnings

Garcia’s rap career began when Smokepurpp produced a beat and invited him to freestyle over it. The resulting track was independently released on SoundCloud in 2016 under the title “Lil Pump,” recorded entirely with iPhone headphones. He quickly followed it with singles “Elementary,” “Ignorant,” “Gang Shit,” and “Drum$tick,” each accumulating over three million streams on SoundCloud. In 2016, he and Smokepurpp co-headlined the No Jumper tour. In early 2017, he released “D Rose” and “Boss,” which together collected 70 million combined SoundCloud streams. Chicago-based director Cole Bennett produced the music video for “D Rose” free of charge after discovering it online, and the video accumulated 145 million YouTube views within a year.

“Gucci Gang” breakthrough

In October 2017, Lil Pump released “Gucci Gang,” a single built on a simple beat and a repetitive chant of the phrase “Gucci Gang,” which quickly became a viral hit on YouTube, TikTok, and streaming platforms. The song debuted high on several Billboard charts, eventually peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was certified multiple times platinum by the RIAA, with reports indicating at least triple‑platinum and higher certifications over time. “Gucci Gang” became Lil Pump’s signature track and a cultural phenomenon, expanding his reach beyond the SoundCloud niche into mainstream radio and popular media, and it was widely covered in outlets such as Billboard, Rolling Stone, Complex, and The Fader. The success of “Gucci Gang” led directly to the release of his self‑titled debut mixtape Lil Pump in October 2017, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and featured collaborations with Smokepurpp, Gucci Mane, Lil Yachty, and Chief Keef.

Major label signing

In June 2017, shortly before turning 17, Lil Pump signed a multi-album record deal with Warner Bros. Records through its imprint Tha Lights Global. The following year, the contract was voided by Warner Bros. Records on the grounds that he had been a minor at the time of signing. The voiding triggered a bidding war among competing labels, with offers reportedly reaching between $8 million and $12 million. Artists including Gucci Mane and DJ Khaled expressed interest in signing him. In 2018, Garcia re-signed with Tha Lights Global and Warner Records for $8 million, which included a 14 percent royalty share in the United States.

In April 2018, Garcia released “Esskeetit,” which debuted and peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100. He performed it on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on May 24. Three months later, he released “Drug Addicts” alongside a music video featuring actor Charlie Sheen. That same year, he collaborated with Kanye West and comedian Adele Givens on “I Love It,” which debuted at number one on the Canadian Hot 100 and generated 46 million streams in its first week. His second studio album, Harverd Dropout, was released in February 2019, featuring Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Offset, Quavo, Smokepurpp, Lil Uzi Vert, 2 Chainz, and YG. It debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 but received largely negative critical reviews.

Independent era

In December 2021, Garcia and producer Ronny J quietly released a new album titled No Name with no social media promotion, resulting in a commercial failure. In March 2023, he released his third studio album, Lil Pump 2, featuring YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Ty Dolla Sign, and Smokepurpp, to positive critical reception, though it did not chart. In June 2025, Garcia traveled to Russia despite the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and performed at a concert in Moscow alongside Smokepurpp.

Controversies

Lil Pump has been involved in numerous controversies both online and in legal settings, including multiple arrests and incidents related to weapons, drugs, and violence. Here are the scenarios in which he has been arrested before:

  • In February 2018, Garcia was arrested for discharging a weapon in an inhabited place after a home invasion attempt at his San Fernando Valley residence. Police found evidence suggesting the bullet came from inside the home and investigated his mother for endangering a minor and having an unsecured firearm.
  • In August 2018, he was arrested for driving without a license in Miami, which his manager confirmed to Billboard, stating that he had served a prison sentence without providing further details.
  • On December 4, 2018, Danish police arrested him in Copenhagen for possessing marijuana, fined him $700 to $800, and banned him from entering the country for two years. He livestreamed himself flipping his middle finger at a police officer while being detained.
  • On December 13, 2018, he was arrested at a Miami airport for disorderly conduct after refusing a luggage search for cannabis.
  • On December 16, 2018, he was accused of racism after previewing “Butterfly Doors,” which contained Asian slurs and stereotypes. Chinese rappers including Awkwafina released diss tracks in response, and Garcia issued an apology video on Instagram before releasing an edited version of the song.
  • In November 2021, the IRS filed a lien on his Miami home for unpaid taxes of $1.6 million.
  • In December 2020, JetBlue banned him after he refused to wear a mask on a flight during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Political endorsements

In October 2020, Garcia endorsed Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, appearing at a Trump rally wearing a Make America Great Again cap and citing Joe Biden’s proposed tax plan as his primary motivation. He continued his support for Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, announcing plans to perform a diss track against Kamala Harris at a Trump rally before later retracting and announcing he would write a song in support of Trump instead. He stated publicly that he would have left the United States had Harris won the 2024 election.

Personal life

Garcia resides primarily in Miami, Florida. Outside of his musical career, he has publicly documented his struggles with substance abuse, specifically regarding prescription drug dependency, which he has stated he actively works to manage. His father, Fabio Garcia, died in April 2022.
