Early life
Anahí Giovanna Puente Portilla was born on 14 May 1983 in Mexico City to a Spanish father and a Mexican mother. Her father is Enrique Puente, and her mother is Marichelo Portilla. She has a younger biological sister, Marichelo Puente Portilla, who has worked in Mexican television and entertainment as an actress and presenter. Through her father she also has a half-sister, Diana Puente Hidalgo, who lives in Peru. Because both of her parents were connected to the entertainment world, Anahí grew up surrounded by television and theater, and she began working as a child performer on the Mexican children’s program Chiquilladas, which was one of the first steps in her professional career in front of the camera.
Telenovela career
Anahí appeared in numerous Televisa telenovelas throughout the 1990s, including Alondra (1995), Vivo por Elena (1998), El Diario de Daniela (1998), and Mujeres Engañadas (1999). In 1989, she won an Ariel Award for Best Child Actress for the film Había Una Vez Una Estrella. Her first leading role came in Pedro Damián’s production Primer Amor… A Mil por Hora in 2000, where she played Jovanna Luna. In 2002, she joined the cast of Clase 406, where she worked alongside future RBD bandmates Alfonso Herrera, Dulce María, and Christian Chávez. Her last telenovela was Dos Hogares in 2011.
RBD
In 2004, Anahí was cast as Mia Colucci in the Mexican telenovela Rebelde, a remake of the Argentine series Rebelde Way. The show ran for over 440 episodes between 2004 and 2006 and became an international hit. On October 30, 2004, RBD was officially formed from the show’s cast, comprising Anahí, Alfonso Herrera, Dulce María, Christopher von Uckermann, Maite Perroni, and Christian Chávez. The group released six studio albums under EMI, such as Rebelde (2004), Nuestro Amor (2005), Celestial (2006), Rebels (2006), Empezar Desde Cero (2007), and Para Olvidarte de Mí (2009), selling over 15 million records worldwide and becoming one of the best-selling Latin acts of all time. Their debut album, Rebelde, reached number 95 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Latin Albums chart, while spending five weeks at number one in Spain. Nuestro Amor sold 160,000 copies in its first week in Mexico alone and earned the group their first Latin Grammy nomination at the 2006 ceremony. The lead single from Celestial, “Ser o Parecer,” topped the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart for two consecutive weeks.
RBD held four world tours between 2004 and 2008, performing to an estimated five million fans worldwide. They announced their disbandment in August 2008, with their final concert held in Madrid in March 2009. In September 2020, the group’s music was made available on streaming platforms for the first time, and four members reunited for the virtual concert Ser O Parecer in December 2020. On January 19, 2023, RBD announced the Soy Rebelde Tour, their fifth and final concert tour, produced by Live Nation. The tour ran from August 25 to December 21, 2023, spanning 27 cities across North and South America, with five of the six original members participating. The tour sold over 1.6 million tickets and grossed over $231 million, making it the highest-grossing Latin tour of 2023 and the second highest-grossing tour by a Latin artist at the time of its run. During a show on November 17, 2023, Anahí was hospitalized with a kidney infection and missed portions of two consecutive performances. The tour concluded at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on December 21, 2023.
Solo music career
Anahí released her self-titled debut studio album in 1993 at age 10, followed by ¿Hoy Es Mañana? (1996), which featured the singles “Corazón de Bombón” and “Por Volverte a Ver,” and Anclado En Mi Corazón (1997) and Baby Blue (2000). Her 2009 solo comeback album, Mi Delirio, sold one million copies worldwide and was certified Gold in Brazil. Its Mi Delirio World Tour was named the seventh most profitable tour of 2010 by Billboard. A deluxe edition of the album followed in 2010, featuring the lead single “Alérgico,” inspired by Paulo Coelho’s Aleph, which became the second most-played song in Mexico for 11 consecutive weeks and reached number one on iTunes Mexico. Her sixth and most recent studio album, Inesperado, was released in 2016, with its single “Rumba” featuring Wisin reaching number one on Billboard’s Tropical Songs chart.
