What religion is Megan Thee Stallion?

Megan Thee Stallion is an American award-winning rapper who identifies as a Christian. She has released tracks referencing her faith, such as “God’s favorite,” and has spoken about having honest conversations with God.

Megan Thee Stallion rose to fame in the late 2010s through a series of viral freestyles on social media and her breakthrough mixtape “Tina Snow.” Under the persona of her alter ego, the Houston-born rapper quickly gained a massive following, establishing her signature confident flow and tongue-in-cheek lyricism with hits like “Big Ole Freak.” After capturing the cultural zeitgeist with her 2019 “Hot Girl Summer” movement, Megan launched a mainstream career that would cement her status as one of the most dominant and influential forces in modern hip-hop. Her 2020 debut studio album, “Good News,” was a massive commercial success, earning critical acclaim and producing the chart-topping, TikTok-viral smash “Savage” later remixed with Beyoncé, as well as her historic, boundary-pushing collaboration “WAP” with Cardi B. Subsequent projects like the emotionally raw “Traumazine” and her 2024 self-titled album “Megan” showcased her technical vocal range, resilience, and mastery of blending hard-hitting Southern rap with vulnerable storytelling. The release of her chart-topping solo single “Hiss” and international joint tracks like “Neva Play” featuring RM of BTS further elevated her global cultural impact.

In recent years, Megan took full creative control of her career by launching her own independent record label, Hot Girl Productions, securing full ownership of her master recordings. This bold move was hailed as a major political and financial statement for female artists navigating the music industry. Her high-energy performance at the 2024 Democratic National Convention and her highly successful “Hot Girl Summer Tour” became defining moments in her live performance history, proving her ability to command both political and musical stages.

Beyond music, Megan has starred in projects like the musical comedy film “Dicks: The Musical” and guest-starred on Marvel’s “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.” She has also built one of the most powerful personal brands in entertainment, spanning fashion partnerships, her own luxury tequila line Chicas Divertidas, and impactful philanthropy through her Pete and Thomas Foundation, which advocates for education, senior care, and mental health wellness.

In March 2021, Megan Thee Stallion won three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance, becoming the first female rapper to win the Best New Artist category in the 21st century.

Label Disputes

Megan Thee Stallion is no stranger to run-ins with her record labels and previously faced restrictive contract stipulations that halted her career momentum. Following a violation of her creative freedom after she signed a management deal with Roc Nation, she was effectively blocked from releasing new music by 1501 Certified Entertainment in 2020. Then, in 2022, Megan increased her legal warfare against the label and its founder, Carl Crawford, filing a lawsuit in a Texas federal court. She sought $1 million in damages, accusing the company of underpaying her royalties, leaking her album “Traumazine” early, and refusing to recognize her project “Something for the Hotties” as a contractually fulfilling album. Then, while the legal battle was still ongoing, Megan was hit with a countersuit from 1501, who fiercely doubled down on claims that she still owed them additional full-length commercial albums. She was granted multiple temporary restraining orders against the label, allowing her to promote and distribute her music independently while the bitter litigation dragged out.

In August 2022, the legal battle escalated when Rap-A-Lot Records founder J. Prince was pulled into the controversy after Megan’s legal team cited allegations of intimidation and threats tied to the label’s local muscle. In October 2023, the multi-year standoff reached a sudden conclusion when both parties agreed to a confidential settlement. She was released from her binding deal shortly after. In 2024, she officially launched her own fully independent label, Hot Girl Productions, gaining complete ownership of her masters and shifting her focus to independent brand control.

Early life and education

Born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete on February 15, 1995, in San Antonio, Texas, Megan Thee Stallion is the daughter of Joseph Pete Jr. and Holly Aleece Thomas. Her mother, who raised her in the suburban South Park neighborhood of Houston, rapped professionally under the moniker “Holly-Wood” and frequently brought young Megan along to her studio recording sessions.

Megan displayed an early interest in the performing arts and creative writing, secretly penning her own rap verses at the age of fourteen before eventually showcasing her raw talents to her mother. Her formal education continued at Pearland High School, where classmates frequently noted her striking 5-foot-10 stature and began calling her a “stallion,” a formative moniker she confidently adopted as her permanent stage name. After graduating high school in 2013, she initially enrolled at Prairie View A&M University. Academically, she later transferred to Texas Southern University (TSU), where she balanced her skyrocketing entertainment career with her studies, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Science degree in health administration.

Chart-Topping Breakthrough

Megan’s professional breakthrough came through the Billboard charts, starting with her first entry on the Hot 100 with the single “Big Ole Freak” in early 2019. Her major breakout moment arrived when her song “Savage,” from the extended play “Suga,” became a massive viral sensation on TikTok and generated a global dance challenge. The track became an astronomical success after fellow Houston native Beyoncé hopped on the official remix, propelling the song straight to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and establishing Megan as a recognizable face for a global generation of music listeners.

During this breakthrough period, she also secured a historic guest feature on Cardi B’s blockbuster single “WAP.” The record-shattering collaboration debuted at number one, racked up the most first-week streams for a single in history at the time, and dominated the charts for weeks.

Collaborations

Megan Thee Stallion has collaborated with many other artists over the years. In 2019, she collaborated with DaBaby to release the single “Cash Shit.” The mixtape Fever and its single “Cash Shit” were both huge hits, helping her climb the charts and cementing her rise on the Billboard Hot 100. Also with Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign, Megan released the hit non-album single “Hot Girl Summer.” Meanwhile, on the Birds of Prey soundtrack single “Diamonds,” Megan appeared alongside Normani as a featured guest.

In 2020, Megan collaborated with Beyoncé on the “Savage” remix, which was used to raise money for disaster relief and reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Also in that year, Megan appears on the blockbuster song “WAP” with Cardi B. Following this, she collaborated with Young Thug on the track “Don’t Stop.” In 2021, Megan collaborated with Ariana Grande and Doja Cat to release the “34+35” remix. Among her other appearances, Megan was featured on the “Beautiful Mistakes” single by Maroon 5; “SG” by DJ Snake alongside Ozuna and Lisa of BLACKPINK; and “Sweetest Pie” by Dua Lipa. She also appeared on her own studio albums with features like “Cry Baby” with DaBaby and “Freaky Girls” alongside SZA and later hit global charts with “Neva Play” featuring RM of BTS and the viral single “Mamushi” featuring Japanese rapper Yuki Chiba.

Grammy Success

Megan Thee Stallion won three categories at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021. She won Best New Artist, becoming the second female rapper in Grammy history to claim the award, after Lauryn Hill in 1999. The same night, her collaboration with Beyoncé on “Savage (Remix)” won both Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance, marking the first all-female collaboration to win in those categories. All three of her Grammy wins to date came from that single ceremony. She has since added six BET Awards, five BET Hip Hop Awards, four American Music Awards, and four MTV Video Music Awards to her collection.

Philanthropy

Megan is a very active philanthropist who volunteers many hours for a wide variety of causes. In 2020, while advocating publicly for Black women and speaking out about the lack of justice for Breonna Taylor, she launched the “Don’t Stop” scholarship fund with Amazon’s Music Rap Rotation, offering two $10,000 scholarships to women of color pursuing degrees anywhere in the world. That same year, she directed the proceeds from “Savage (Remix)” with Beyoncé to the nonprofit Bread of Life, raising $1.2 million that went toward food, resources, and emergency assistance for the community.

In March 2021, she partnered with Fashion Nova to launch “Women On Top,” a $1 million fund supporting women in education, business, and charity, with the first $25,000 grant going to YWCA Houston’s Center for Women, which provides career resources for homeless women and girls. Donations from the fund went on to include $100,000 to the Breonna Taylor Foundation, $50,000 to Asian Americans Advancing Justice in Atlanta, and $25,000 toward pharmacy and health sciences scholarships at her alma mater, Texas Southern University.

Her most lasting philanthropic commitment came in 2022, when on her 27th birthday she launched the Pete and Thomas Foundation, named in honor of her late parents. The foundation focuses on three pillars: education, providing scholarships, school supplies, and resources to students in high-need communities; housing, addressing needs for senior citizens, single mothers, and families hit by financial emergencies or natural disasters; and health, supporting cancer care, mental health, and food insecurity initiatives. It supports women, children, senior citizens, and underserved communities both in her hometown of Houston and worldwide and has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to provide home repairs and mobility modifications for 30 homes belonging to older Texas residents. The foundation has also held a gala honoring figures like Southern Black Girls and Women’s Consortium founder LaTosha Brown and 13-year-old mental health advocate Mila Henry, recognizing the role of investing in Black girls as a pipeline for future changemakers. Beyond her foundation’s formal work, Megan has lent her voice to national mental health campaigns like Seize the Awkward, encouraging young people to check in on their friends’ well-being.
